A 100% wool shirt, woven in Italy
Most of our shirts are cut from 100% merino wool, nothing else. The fibre is 17.5-micron ZQ-certified merino from New Zealand, fine enough that people are usually surprised how smooth it feels: not like wool at all, a hand feel you'd otherwise only find in the most luxurious shirts, and it's woven into shirting fabric by an Italian mill that has been weaving wool for generations. That combination is rarer than it sounds: a 100% merino wool dress shirt that is light, smooth and machine washable takes serious weaving skill. The result is a lightweight shirt of 135 g/m² for most of the year, with heavier fabrics for our flannel and denim shirts.
The business travel shirt
Picture the trip. An early flight, a meeting straight from the airport, dinner with clients, a drink at the hotel bar afterwards. With a cotton shirt you'd be looking for a fresh one by dinner. A merino shirt doesn't crease in the plane seat and doesn't pick up odour, so it looks the same at the bar as it did in the boardroom. Back in your room, hang it on a hanger in the bathroom while you shower. The steam relaxes the few creases that did form and the fibre releases the day. Next morning it's ready for the follow-up meeting. This is why frequent flyers pack two Wolk shirts for a week.
Wear it for days, wash it once
Merino wool is naturally antibacterial. It holds on to the molecules that cause odour and only releases them in the wash, which is how a customer could wear one of our shirts five days in a row, airing it at night, and pass his own smell test. When a wash is due, our shirts are machine washable: wool cycle at 30°C, wool detergent, then hang to dry. We do recommend a wash bag. Not because the fabric is fragile, but because a shirt tangled around a pair of jeans in the drum gets pulled out of shape. Ironing is easy: the fabric takes heat and steam without complaint and smooths out in a fraction of the time a cotton shirt needs. Full instructions in our garment care guide.
A wool shirt in summer
It sounds wrong until you've tried it. Fine merino moves moisture away from your skin and lets it evaporate, so you stay dry in a warm office or on a hot walk between meetings, where cotton would cling. The lightweight fabric breathes better than cotton shirting, the fibre offers natural UV protection and, because it stays fresh, you're not carrying a spare. Our 135 g/m² shirts are the ones to reach for from May to September. In winter the same shirt turns into a thermoregulating layer; add a merino T-shirt underneath and you're set for the cold.
Slim, regular or relaxed fit
Most styles come in a slim fit that follows the body and a relaxed fit with more room through the chest and waist, cut for comfort and for wearing untucked. Button-up or button-down
The two terms get mixed up constantly. Every shirt here is a button-up: it closes with buttons down the front. A button-down shirt is the one whose collar points also button to the body. Our classic collar merino shirts and spread collar merino shirts are the dressier options, made to sit under a jacket or frame a tie. The merino button-down shirts keep their shape worn open over a tee with jeans or chinos, which makes them the casual pick.
Merino flannel and wool denim for winter
When it gets properly cold, the Arne merino flannel shirt takes over: a brushed 280 g/m² merino flannel in checks and plain navy, with a chest pocket, warm enough to wear as a light overshirt. The Arne merino denim shirt comes in two weights: a light merino oxford for spring and autumn, and a heavier 235 g/m² merino twill with the body of a real denim shirt for the cold months. Both give you the denim look in a fabric that breathes and stays fresh where cotton denim does neither.
The white merino shirt question
White is where fabric weight matters most. The Alex and Tristan white shirts are 135 g/m² of pure merino. Undyed merino is naturally a warm, soft white rather than a bleached one, and like most lightweight white shirts the fabric is slightly sheer, which is part of its summer character. If you want a fully opaque, optic-white dress shirt, choose the Oliver: a 190 g/m² twill of merino and 37% lyocell, which gives the brighter white and full coverage a formal white shirt asks for.
Details that last
The buttons are corozo, the seed of the tagua palm known as vegetable ivory. Tailors used it on the best shirts a century ago before plastic took over, and today it is the premium ecological choice: hard, naturally patterned, kind to the fabric and it won't crack in the wash. Each shirt is sewn in Portugal, in a workshop we know personally, from Italian cloth made with ZQ-certified, mulesing-free wool.
